General Tun (Dr) Hashim Mohd Ali (Rtd)

General Tun (Dr) Hashim Mohd Ali (Rtd)

Fusang Exchange Chairman

His character can best be described as one of a thinker and a strategist – forceful, discerning, relentless, a believer for discipline. Yet, beneath the disciplined countenance, the refined charm and flair of his – has always managed to exude itself effortlessly, portraying a façade of tensile strength matching with a cast of geniality. Although a figure of high eminence and repute in the Malaysian society, the sense of nonchalance on his gentry has long been admired and appreciated by many.

Born in a family of seven boys and three girls in 1935, Tun (General) Hashim is the second youngest in the family. At the youthful age of 18, he has already begun crafting a career in the military service. It was there, that he made his mark swiftly and commendably.

Tun Hashim was first commissioned in the Royal Malay Regiment in December 1956 after attending a series of Military Officer Cadet Courses both in Malaysia and overseas. On commissioning, he was posted to the 3rd Battalion – The Royal Malay Regiment in 1957.

During his career in the Malaysian Army, he commanded the 5th Battalion of The Royal Malay Regiment – then operating in Sarawak. Other staff appointments followed and after attending several military courses – he was given the command of the Rejang Area Security Command (RASCOM) in Sarawak – responsible for the restoration and maintenance of peace and stability in the region.  As the Security Forces Commander, RASCOM contributed towards the elimination of the 2nd Bureau North Kalimantan Communist Party in Sarawak.

He was appointed Chief of Staff in the Ministry of Defence in 1980 holding the rank of Major General after attending a course at the National Defence College in India.

In 1981, he assumed command of the 2nd Division stationed in Penang. As the General Officer Commanding of the Division, he worked closely with the 4th Royal Thai Army along the Malaysia/Thai border with the task of eliminating the elements of the Malayan Communist Party that operated along the border region. In this respect – he was also the Co-Chairman of the Regional Border Committee Malaysia/Thailand and contributed towards the complete elimination of the Malayan Communist Party both along the border regions and in Peninsular Malaysia.

After a tour of duty as the Deputy Chief of the Army in 1983, he was appointed the Chief of Army in November 1985. During this period, he initiated the re-organisation and modernisation of the Army.

Two years later – in October 1987, General Hashim was assigned to the highest standing in the service – a highly honoured and an unquestionably compelling post of the Chief of Defence Forces – responsible directly for defence of the country and development of the Malaysian Armed Forces. He was a member of various Defence and Security related Committees which were then chaired by the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia.

General Hashim was one of the three signatories of the Surrender Agreement between the Government of Malaysia and The Malayan Communist Party whereby the Malayan Communist Party agreed to lay down their arms and disband the party’s military apparatus. Following 38 years of distinguished service, he retired in April 1992.

Still, Tun Hashim’s involvement is hardly fettered by the military circle, in actuality his work and philosophy extends way beyond the border of a battlefield. In pursuit of scholarly achievement – General Hashim attended the Harvard Business School where he acquired a Diploma in Advanced Management Programme prior to his retirement.

His contribution to the trade and commerce industry is no less significant. Weaving through a vast tapestry of significant accomplishments, organizing experience and sporting passion, it really came as no surprise to the community when he was offered by the Government of Malaysia – after his retirement from the Malaysian Armed Forces -  to spearhead the Kuala Lumpur 98 – XVI Commonwealth Games  - an international sporting event which was staged from 11 – 21 September 1998 which took more than 4 years to prepare. It was declared the “Best Games Ever” by the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Tun Hashim proved his strong leadership and management credibility – this time in the corporate sector. He is currently the Chairman of two (2) public listed companies namely: Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad which primary business are in the manufacturing industry and Datasonic Group Berhad is involved in the provision of ICT solutions including the smart card personalisation (such as secure ID or chip-based credit/debit/bank cards), customisation of software and hardware solutions, project management, consultancy, R&D and technical consultancy services.

Tun Hashim is also Chairman of National Aerospace & Defence Industries Sdn Bhd which is an investment holding company involved in various aerospace and defence related industries. He was recently appointed as Chairman of Fusang Exchange Ltd – a company incorporated in Labuan specializing in exchange market business.

He also sits on the Board of Directors of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) – a Malaysia Think Tank responsible for formulating policies and conducting research for national and international issues.

He is currently the Chairman of The Regional Committee of Glutamate Science Southeast Asia/South Asia (“RCGS”). The member countries are Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Bangladesh and India.

Tun Hashim is also the President of Gagasan Mantan Panglima (The Chiefs’ Circle) which was formed in April 2007 and officially registered with the Registrar of Societies on 21 October 2014. This organisation comprised of former Chief of Defence Forces, Chief of Army, Navy and Airforce. The purpose of this grouping is to promote esprit-de-corps amongst former Chiefs and contribute one way or the other to the Malaysian Armed Forces as well as maintaining an on-going relationship with former Chiefs of the ASEAN Armed Forces to promote peace and harmony within the ASEAN region.

Tun Hashim was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Salford – United Kingdom on 14 January 1999 and The National Defence University of Malaysia in 2012. In 2018, General Hashim was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia Hall of Fame for his contributions in the sports arena particularly in staging the “Best Games Ever” – The Kuala Lumpur – XVI Commonwealth Games in 1998.

Tun Hashim, in his school days was a school representative in hockey, badminton and water polo and is still an ardent sportsman at heart and spirit to this very day. He is a very keen golfer.

Tun Hashim was married to the late Puan Sri Majmin Dato Yahya and together they had three children. They are blessed with five grandchildren.

In 2022, Tun (General) Hashim was conferred the Darjah Seri Setia Mahkota (SSM) award, carrying the title ‘Tun’ by His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. Tun Mohamed Hashim, 87, led the list of 45 recipients of federal awards, honours and medals for the Agong's 2022 birthday awards. There are currently 36 individuals in Malaysia who hold the title of "Tun," which is the highest civilian honour that can be granted in the country.
